Project 2 - Fire Is Catching / SUA

SUA_Plakat

The second collaboration project of Rent-A-Composer was realized by the Sua Trio (Mariana Hernández - violin, Juliette Cürlis - violoncello and Itxaso Etxeberria - piano) and the composer Nina Deuse.

A new composition was created for the fiery Sua Trio, it premiered on 17th september 2023 at Kulturkreis Hösel, Oktogon, Ratingen-Hösel, Germany.

Information to the new composition:

The new work SUA for violin, cello and piano was inspired by the name and nature of the all-female Sua Trio: Sua is Basque and means fire.

The central themes of this project were: fire and female power!

The structure and construction of the composition SUA is inspired by the complex development of gender equality, there are elements that move forward and backward in time, also simultaneously and in several interdependent layers. In the middle of the circa seven-minute trio composition there is a large mirror axis. However, this reflection is anything but perfect as there are a number of distortions. There are stumbling blocks, hurdles and regressions, and yet things continue to move forward.

This new work for trio is based on a contemporary fusion of hip hop grooves and abstracted soca, rumba and samba rhythms. Particular importance is attached to teamwork, because the melodies and rhythms are only created through perfectly coordinated, spirited interaction - so fiery that a small fire truck was installed.

Project 1 - Designer suit / BOOM GEAR

BoomGear_Plakat

The pilot project of Rent-A-Composer is a collaboration of the Christian Benning Percussion Group and the composer Nina Deuse.

The result of this collaboration was a new composition for the virtuosic ensemble from Munich, premiered by its members Christian Benning, Patrick Stapleton, Felix Kolb, Marcel Morikawa und Godwin Schmid.

Information to the new composition:

BOOM GEAR, the new work for percussion quintet, was created by the concept of a musical designer suit, or a custom-made ‘super suit’ (‘no cape!’). This composition was fitted individually to the artistic concept of the ensemble, their instruments, the set-up and repertoire.

An outstanding characteristic of the Christian Benning Percussion Group is their well-atuned playing, so special attention during the compositional process was brought to the concept of teamwork.
BOOM GEAR carries the principle of interaction to the extremes: All voices are strongly interlocked, no voice can function on its own, and the multiformed melodies and grooves generate only by playing together perfectly.

Flexibility and mobilty are also strenghts of the CBPG, resulting in all compositional elements being in constant movement between voices, players and instruments.

In stylistic regards BOOM GEAR fusions contemporary composition techniques, material from art music (e.g. György Ligeti, Olivier Messiaen) and elements of popular music (e.g. hip hop grooves, electronic dance music). Additionally, several self-created composition techniques were used.
